 Compound Sounds - The Gambia

SHERRIFO IN ENGLAND IN 2005

Jali Sherrifo Konteh performed at the Whitby Musicport Festival during his 2005 tour. Here is a short video clip of that appearance.

SHERRIFO IN HIS COMPOUND IN BRIKAMA IN 2006

On February 9th 2006, Jali Sherrifo Konteh moved into the compound that he is building in Brikama. A party was obviously called for with lots of music and dancing. The opening song of many hours of partying was "Alla La Ke" and you can hear and see four jali musicians:-
Jali Sherrifo Konteh - (kora and singing)
Suntou Kouyate (balafon)
Makoy Jobarteh (singing)- wife of Suntou
Kankou Kouyate (singing)- wife of Suntou's brother

A NEW GENERATION OF JALIS!

Two year old Jali Sherrifo Kouyate is the son of two jalis, Suntou Kouyate and Makoy Jobarteh in Brikama in The Gambia. He is named after a third jali, Jali Sherrifo Konteh. His young life is totally surrounded by music-making and already seems very committed to music making himself. Here, accompanied by his father on balafon he gives a hilarious performance as he impersonates the person he is named after. It ought to be pointed out that he is not singing in Mandinka, but in his own particular nonsense language! After showing his interest in the kora, he moves on to his father's balafon
